Dynamic Motion Measurement and Analysis

Data Acquisition Software screen shot

This is a screen shot of our PC based Data Acquisition and Analysis equipment. Here we have used a DC accelerometer to capture acceleration data off a packaging machine slider. We have integrated the data twice to obtain velocity and displacement. The data capture was triggered from a cam-shaft mounted incremental encoder. You might be able to see that our software system is very flexible, and has been purpose built for analyzing machine motion and other data. We would typically measure all the cam/servo driven axes to produce a dynamic timing chart for a machine. From this we can assess the condition of the mechanisms and machine and make recommendations for typically low-cost improvements.

In the case shown, the system rigidity was insufficient to maintain precise motion control and the backlash in the indexing cam was excessive. Our recommendations were followed and the problem solved.

Anaysis available from measured data:
  • Residual vibrations in displacement
  • Motion period / vibration ratio (Period Ratio)
  • Cross-over impact due to backlash
  • Low vibration damping in system
  • Excessive drive motor speed fluctations or variations
  • Dynamic phasing errors between inteacting mechanisms
  • Actual Dynamic Timing Diagrams of machine
  • Is actual motion design near to designed motions?
