The animation on the left shows a simple chain
following a racetrack path. The sprockets have six teeth and
there are 10 links in the chain. One of the links has been omitted
to show how the center distance must vary as the remaining links
move around the racetrack and sprockets to accommodate polygonal
or chordal action. This shows that a racetrack indexing conveyor
with six teeth sprockets would fail very quickly due to the
continual stretching and relaxing of the chain. |
 |
The animation on the below shows the transition
curve that eliminates the polygonal action. This curve has a
special geometry and requires that straight section be offset
by a small amount. The curve eliminates the step change in acceleration
that normally accompanies an instantaneous transition from straight
to circular path, and ensures that there is no tension variation
in the chain. |
