Phase Patterning tool is perfect for modeling Multi-head rotary or indexing machines
Packaging machines can have many identical tools and heads that traverse though a machine as it cycles.
- A continuous motion filling machine will have many filling heads that are all driven off the same barrel cam
- A Carton machine may use an epicyclic gear arrangement to generate a path suitable for high speed carton erection. The tooling can be replicated perhaps 3 , 4, or 10 times around a sun or ring gear.
MechDesigner has a built-in a powerful Patterning tool. This is not like a 3D CAD patterning tool which patterns features in a purely geometric fashion (circular or rectangular etc.). The patterning tool also patterns the phase of the mechanism.

Rotary Machine - before Patterning
Single head of a rotary labeling machine
A single head of a rotary labeling machine has been modeled. We need to spin the pack to be labeled so that when the pack is adjacent to the label magazine the peripheral speed of the pack is zero. The pack will then roll across the face of the label magazine, pulling out a label.
We need to model only one head. Then we can use the patterning tool to replicate all the other heads. The Patterning tool copies the head's position and timing.Read more >>>
