Example 2D Model: Wind Screen Wiper Mechanism using a Geared 8 bar mechanism.
This is a model the Mercedes Benz windscreen wiper. It is an 8-bar mechanism with a gear-pair to create a special motion of the wiper blade. These mechanisms are easy to model when you follow a few simple rules. MechDesigner can model mechanisms with any number of parts, easily.
In this case, a six-bar mechanism rotates the wiper blade by 165 degrees. As the blade rotates, a gear-pair rotates a crank that drives a slider. The slider is the wiper blade and so as the blade rotates it can be made to extend and retract. By putting in the correct gear ratio - you can easily edit the number of teeth, and a number of other gear parameters - the timing of the rotation and the sliding motion can be synchronized to ensure the wiper blade extends and retracts at the correct angle.
